Hours and Schedule
NSP students usually work in one classroom from 4 to 15 hours per week for some, but not necessarily all, weekdays, depending upon their class schedule. Some students work for after school or Saturday programs as well. Non-Work/Study students are limited to a maximum of six hours per week; Work/Study students may work up to the maximum permitted by the Work/Study Office.

Blocks of time of at least two hours are preferred on the days that are worked, excluding the time required to get to the school and back. Most elementary schools are open from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., with some schools offering after-school support programs in which NSP students may work. Morning availability is preferred for the elementary schools because the core subjects are usually taught then, but afternoon hours are also available.

NSP students are expected to determine a work schedule in consultation with the classroom teacher to whom they are assigned by the principal or school contact. Once that schedule is established, the student must be consistent in meeting that obligation, or the relationship with the teacher will be impaired. Schedules can be changed from quarter to quarter, as NSP student class schedules change.

Salary
NSP students sign in and out of their school office each day they work. However, they are not paid by the school. The University of Chicago pays the salaries of NSP students. Salaries are competitive with other employment opportunities for students.

Students working for the NSP complete timecards and pick up checks on an alternating week basis at the Neighborhood Schools Program office (5525 S. Ellis, Rm 165). The hours that each student fills in on the time card must coincide with the hours signed in and out at the school, and, also kept on a facsimile of the time card.

Debra Cooks in the Neighborhood Schools Program office in 5525 S. Ellis, Room 165 (south side of Parking Structure), takes care of payroll-related issues. She can be reached at 834-1935, and Duel Richardson can be reached at 702-8803.
